ECUADOR: My First Sailfish!

Fishing Boat, Crucita,

Here in Crucita, Ecuador you can buy fish right off the fishing boats. Small shrimp is $2.00/lb sometimes if you are lucky. But more normal price for shrimp is $3-4.00/lb. And if you pay an extra $1.00 they will clean and butterfly it for you.

You can buy fish at about $2-$3.00 per pound filleted and depending on the size of the fish you can buy the whole fish for less. I have now made friends with Gabriel, the man who sells fish down the street in my neighborhood. His brother owns one of the fishing boats nearby.

The first day we met, Gabriel described with great joy and a diagram drawn out on newspaper how the fishing nets work.  Then be began to tell me what different fish he had to sell that had just come off the fishing boats that morning:

Linguado which is like filet of sole.

Dorado which is their version of swordfish.

Piculo Gaucho – Blanco, white and is a little less common to catch in this fishing area.

Piculo Gaucho – Roja, which is a more rare fish to catch in this area.

Piculo Gaucho – Normal, which is, you guessed it, the normal everyday piculo gaucho.

Gabriel also pulled out:

Corvino and Robalo – which at this moment,  I have not tried yet and honestly have no idea what they are or what they taste like.

Then Gabriel held up his finger and told me to wait. Moments later he came out of his fishing hut with a fish that was practically as tall as me and which had a huge long pointed nose.

His big surprise was to come. He lifted up the fin on top and spread it out like a huge fan and then gestured first to the fish and then to the air as if it were flying: I was seeing my very first Sailfish up close and personal!
