Yesterday when I was in the kitchen, an Ecuadorian cousin of the family walked in, took one look at me and said, “Who’s the Gringo?”
Without hesitation, one of the daughters, Mari, looked up and said (with a complete straight face,) “Oh she’s one of Doma’s daughters.”
The guy looked completely confused. “Come again?” he said.
Then Mari laughed and said, “This is Marianita. She’s the one daughter Doma can order around. Marianita always does exactly what Doma says. That would never work with the rest of us!”
Then we all laughed.
The Ecuadorian cousin turned to me and said with a smile now ‘getting it,’ “Well. Very nice to meet you daughter Marianita.”
Then he thought for just a moment and smiled even wider and said, “You’re smart to do exactly what Doma says. Good luck!”
He turned to leave and then turned back and gestured with his hand to all five sisters and three cousins and Doma in the room and then looked at me, rolled his eyes and said,
“In fact, good luck with all these women!”
He laughed a good hearty laugh, which we all shared, and he left.
